Workstation is defined as an
area in the business organization which is meant to perform the specialized tasks like Engineering Applications (CAD/CAM), Desktop Publishing, Software Development, Modelling & Simulation and other applications that need high quality graphic capabilities and high resolution graphics display.

Workstations are generally comprises of a Desktop Computer along with Microprocessor, Input & Output Device, Display, Hardware and Software for connecting to a network. Workstations also have mass storage devices like disk drive and the operating systems used are UNIX and Windows NT. Workstations have the capabilities to carry out multiple tasks at the same time.

Mostly workstations are single-user computers but they are linked together to form local-area-network. Workstations are designed to meet the special needs of a business or a profession. Today the Workstation market is mainly dominated by companies like Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Sun Microsystems, Apple, etc.

In Workstations Technical staff is working for a long continuous hours of time so the environment of the Workstation must be user-friendly with sufficient light, ventilation and normal temperature conditions for getting maximum output of the working staff.
