What is a Franchise?

Answer:
A franchise is a legally binding agreement between
a company and an individual or entity that results in an ongoing business relationship between the two parties.  The franchisee pays a fee in exchange for the right to operate under the name, trademark, or logo of the franchisor and/or to sell or distribute the franchisor’s products or services in a particular area.

The franchisee owns and operates an independent business and is responsible for all expenses related to said business.  However, the franchisee must adhere to operational and financial standards established by the franchisor, per the terms of the franchise agreement.

Often times, the franchisor will provide trade secrets relating to product or service offerings as well as marketing and promotional information.  Purchasing a franchise license can be as little as $10,000 or as much as $500,000.

A few examples of popular franchises are:
McDonalds
Sports Clips
Maaco
Subway
Curves
Jackson Hewitt Tax Services
