Based in New Jersey, Pantone became famous for its color matching system that is in use today by printing services, paint distributors, and hairstylists. Pantone became a company in 1962 and originally sold color cards for cosmetics companies. On August 23, 2007, Pantone was purchased by X-Rite, inc., for a price of $180 Million, with the deal being completed in October 2007. X-Rite uses its own color measurement system and software alongside Pantone's matching system to help other companies produce exact coloring for their products.
