What is Merchandising?

Answer:
Merchandising is the act in which a business uses methods to stimulate a customer into buying a product.

Merchandising can be done through visual means,
using product packaging or brand names to sell the product.  It can also be done by having a famous person use and talk about the product during a TV show or commercial.  Certain TV shows aimed at children or young adults often have action figures of some of the characters made and sold, and that alone gets people to buy them.

In the case of computers and automobiles, merchandising is done through the number and type of features, the performance specifications, the accessories, and other things.  A common merchandising tactic is, "We don't try to sell you the product.  The product sells itself.  We are here simply to answer any questions you have."
