What is an Assessment?

Answer:
An assessment is a benchmark that is used to critique a specific topic, subject or item.  Depending on
the field, an assessment can be an appraisal, a tax, a documented evaluation or even a payment.  Most appraisals are used for educational purposes and to find the market value on an individual’s assets (e.g.: a house; property).  Many establishments will issue an assessment to their customers detailing repair costs for work to be completed.

An environmental assessment analyzes the impact a proposed project, policy or activity will have on its habitat.  Many fields of industry will conduct a Needs Assessment that helps to determine the projected needs of a specific program or operation.   This can include addressing the “needs” (gaps) between current conditions and those that are desired.
