Should I Copyright my Writing?

Answer:
Many writers – whether published or not –
are concerned about copyrighting their work.  Many people do not know that written work is copyrighted as soon as it is published in any way, whether online or in print.  This began in 1977, when written work was automatically copyrighted for 70 years after the death of the author.

For those who publish their work on a blog or another online format, it is a good idea to notify readers that your content is copyrighted, by adding the copyright symbol © followed by the publication year and your name.  This symbol can be created by pressing Control + Alt + C or by simply copying and pasting the symbol from another website.  It should appear in this format:     © 2009 John Smith

Although your work is automatically copyrighted, it is not possible to sue unless your writing has been registered with the US Copyright Office.  This protects you from having your work stolen or reproduced without your permission.  Therefore, it is a good idea to register your copyrighted material.
